ENG The kindness of strangers is something we heard and read about a lot, but rarely experience it in the big cities we have lived in. I can’t wait to see if it’s really as amazing as people say it is. Of course, this also means, I have to learn to accept help and kindness, which doesn’t always come naturally.
These are all the lovely people, who helped me on my way.
Thank you!
- We caught this Yorkshireman, Warren, in the last minute before he left Nouakchott where he was living for a year. We had only one evening to spend with him, but he was a great host to us and it was lovely to share a meal and some conversation with a fellow English speaker.
- Aziz, the director of a business school in Dakhla invited us for dinner on our evening there – a dinner in a 5 star hotel, with the most delicious seafood meal I’ve ever tasted. If not for him, we wouldn’t even have been let in the place, with our travel-wear: sweatpants and hoodies. We’ve enjoyed the conversation about development of the Dakhla region as much as the food. And, as it turns out, Aziz even speaks a bit of Hungarian, having a Hungarian daughter.
- Huuuuge thanks to the representatives of Polish business development in Morocco, whom spoiled us with posh drinks and exciting conversation in the middle of the desert!
- These two lads, Ahmed and Mohammed were our hosts for a night at a gas station in the middle of the Western Sahara, and boy, they knew how to have fun. They’ve been super friendly and very hospitable. It was interesting to learn about their life there.
- We’ve met Mohammed at a gas station on the first day Ramadan was over. We thought it would be one more day, but he said the fast is over and handed us a huge plate of fruit, apologising for what it must have been a difficult journey for us with food and hospitality being scarce during the day.
- Rasheed, the village fireman is a fantastic chap! As soon as we met him he took us under his wings and after much negotiations with the gendarmerie, he helped us arrange to spend the night in the village’s community hall.
- Night fall on us in a little village one night and our only option was to camp out in the fields near by. As we asked for water in the last farmhouse, we’ve been presented straight away with a full meal, too, followed by the offer to spend the night. We spoke no common language, but delightful murmuring over the food said it all.
- Badreddine was a great sport! Even though he wasn’t home, he offered us his home to keep our bikes for a few days, and spend a day sleeping and getting ready after a super-early flight. He made sure our cycling adventure from Rabat had a great start.
- Patrick was a superb WarmShowers host to us and on a very short notice. We’ve been truly spoiled in his home in Marocco. There’s a special taste to a cold beer just before Iftar in the time of Ramadan and after a long day of cycling.
- My walking adventure in Spain was so far my biggest travel-fiasco. Not enough that I destroyed my feet on the first day, I got super sick as well. It was in this state when I messaged Louie, a 72-year-old English lass on CouchSurfing if I could stay with her a few days in her home in Andalucia. She was a superb host, full of energy and goodwill and did her best to lighten my mood and help me get back on my feet. :)
- What a fantastic family! Meraiah and Tim are truly admirable and inspirational and I was in awe of how creative their kids are. I have stayed with them twice a week in Singapore and they all made me feel very welcome and as part of they family. It was also super interesting to get some insight into expat living in Singapore – and non-expat living in Australia. Can’t wait to meet them again! – – – – – Meraiah, Tim, Morgan and Eden voltak a rezidens családom Szingapúrban.
- Nita and Kieran hosted me for forever in Christchurch. We’ve met on tour in Kyrgyzstan and they gave me a base and a home in New Zealand. They have been fabulous hosts to me and I could even do a short cycling trip with Nita. They are both lovely and amazingly knowledgable about their natural surroundings; I enjoyed learning about glaciers, volcanos, earthquakes, local flora and fauna… and kiwi colloquialism. Thank you, guys! Hope to see you soon!
- Mike, a fellow cyclist, was travelling in the same direction I was, while following a local MTB race. He thoughtfully offered to carry my gear ahead each day, so I can have a few lovely lightweight cycling days. He was a good sport.
- Matthieu was my travel partner in New Zealand. He shared with me his cooker :) , his car, his stories, his pictures… and most of all, he became a friend. I loved sharing this part of the trip with him!
- The unknown people who designed the Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour tyres. 10.000 km without a puncture. – – – – – Mindenki, aki dolgozott a Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour gumik megalkotásán. 10.000 km defekt nélkül.
- Jody and Francois gave me a ride in the rain, in their forever entertaining van that bare the marks of past adventures. They even took an extra stop on the way for me, so I can look at baby seals. :)))
- Ken was an absolute delight to meet. I wish I had 10 hours to travel with him. Successful trail runner with a free spirit, he was full of accounts of old adventures. He would have been my favourite driver, even if he doesn’t stop to buy me his favourite ice cream (hokey-pokey).
- Gary was a superb host even though I’ve got simply imposed upon him. :D I contacted his neighbours on CS who were out of town, but didn’t want to leave me without help, so they arranged me to stay with Gary. I was his first guest and he not only fed me and entertained me with good conversation, but filled my panniers from his pantry in the morning.
- Hitchhiking with the bike is never easy. I’m especially surprised when small cars stop to pick me up. They are actually willing to make an effort to squeeze my bike in, just to help me out. Mark was one of these gents.
- Balazs, Gabi and their daughter, Nadia, are a Hungarian family living in Auckland. They’ve been introduced to my by a friend and then soon became friends themselves. They shared their home and life with me, and I can’t wait to return the favour, when they visit me. It was such a pleasure to get to know them! Fantasztikus emberek!
- Jethro hosted me in his lovely home in Singapore, kept my kit safe while I was away and fixed many things… but my bike.
- When torrents of rain broke down on me, Jia and her family picked me up and took a 3-hour detour just to drive me to my hostel for the evening… Don’t worry about it, we’re all human. – she said.
- Riza and Izmael were on our way to a conference when I asked them for a ride and they went through a lot of trouble to fit an oily me and an even dirtier Libby in their beautiful car. It was a pleasure travelling with them, talking away the time. – – – – –
- David picked me up on an awful day, after a horrible hitchhiking incident. He offered me a ride, found me a safe hostel and bought me a huge dinner. I was ever so grateful.
- Sam and his brother took a u-turn to help me out and offered me a ride on a very dangerous piece of road in Malaysia. Instead of pedalling on a deathly road, I’ve been driving around with them for hours, chatting with cold drinks in hand while they finished some work in town. It was great meeting them.
- Let me say how grateful I am for all the policemen I came across in Thailand. They were fabulous! Kind, helpful, generous. They gave me water, coffee, food, when I let it, escorted me to the police station if I needed a place to stay at night. Every night around them was a great experience. – – – – – Ezúton köszönöm Thaiföld összes rendőrének a kedvességét! Szuper segítőkészek voltak, etettek, itattak, amikor hagytam, sötétedés után számos alkalommal motoros felvezetéssel kísértek az ösre, ahol aludhattam. Soha nem utasítottak el. Egy élmény volt minden alakalom!
- Martin hosted me for a few days before the Bangkok Marathon. He’s an ultra runner, originally from Manchester and now works in BKK as a photographer. He was a great host and good company, and it’s a shame that we didn’t part on good terms. Still, I enjoyed meeting him.
- Kathy has just finished her diving instructor course when I arrived to her place to the rainy Ko Pha Ngan. She shared her home with me, took me out to meet her friends even bought me a thai massage in her favourite massage place. It was great staying with her, even with all the rain and mosquitoes around.
- Naima and her little ones, Natu and Laé gave me home for my ten days in Bishkek and they made me feel more at home than I’ve ever felt these past months. I’ll miss them and can’t wait to see them back home!
- Jenisckyl met me when I was at my weakest, after a food poisoning incident. She, and her little boy, Esan, took me into their Yurt and after filling me up with tea, let me sleep for 16 hours. After that, I was good as new and happily joined in with their daily chores around the yurt. I’m so so grateful for her.
- In a small village after Jalal-Abad I was approached by Maria, the local English teacher, who came to greet me with a handful of chocolates and a Kyrgyz felt heart made by her daughter. The latter became my favourite accessory.
- During my travel through Kyrgyzstan my first homestay was with a loving, well-spirited Uzbek family in the outskirts of Uzbekistan.
- Misa shared with me his tiny cabin and his dinner in a deserted part of Uzbekistan.
- Húgina took me in when none else did. I will never forget her braveness, her kindness.
- In Mashhad, Ali and Samira were my fabulous CS hosts, and shared with me their home and
- We met Maniszur in Shiraz and he took us home to his family to introduce us to Shirazian hospitality and gastronomy. We’ve spent two days with them while they spoiled us with delicious meals, took us sightseeing to Persepolis and to an unforgettable birthday party. It was a great experience! – – – – – Maniszur egy Shirazi borbélynál szedett össze minket, s meginvitált otthonába, ahol két napot töltöttünk, istenieket ettünk-ittunk, városnéztünk, s még Perszepoliszba is elvittek minket, nem is beszélve a felejthetetlen családi szülinapi bulijukról! Szuper élmény volt!
- We bumped into Omid in the Immigration Office in Esfahan. Being a paralympic athlete, he was organising his next travel. He invited us to their home, where his mum spoiled us with her cooking and drove us around town to meet friends and see the city.
- Azam and Parisa we met one late night when we arrived arrived to Esfahan and after 2 minutes they inited us to their home to stay for the night. For the next they they even arranged us a private driver to take us around the city. Their hospitality was so kind and unexpected – it will not be forgiven.
- Saeid and Mayam were our first CouchSurfing hosts in Iran. They welcomed us into their beautiful Teheran home and we not only got a very comfortable place and nice people to stay with, but also our first home-made fesenjan (Sofia’s favourite Iranian dish). :) – – – – – Saeid and Maryam voltaik az első iron CS vendéglátóink. Gyönyörű otthonukban kényelmes helyünk volt, amigo a vízumainkat intéztük, s náluk megkóstolhattuk az első hi fesenjanunkat is (Zsófi kedvenc iráni étele).
- Daniel is a friend from Uni, who organised every delicate detail of our Yerevan stay, including multiple dental/medical check-ups. Meeting him wasn’t only great for nostalgic reasons, but also to pick his brilliant brain about his country. – – – – – Daniel egyetemi csoporttársam volt Oszlóban, s remek volt most viszont látni. Óriási tudása belátást engedett nekünk Örményország legfőbb problémáiba – s még a fogorvoshoz is élkísért minket.
- Laszlo is an Armenian raised in Transylvania. When he heard about our trip he got in touch with us and offered his help in the city. As we couldn’t find a CS host, we ended up asking him for a place to sleep and he was kind enough to share his one-bedroom with us. Thank you. Oh, and he also guided us through the world’s biggest manuscript collection in the Matenadaran, where he works. – – – – – Laci egy örmény származású magyar, aki Jerevánba települt. Amikor hallott róla, hogy a város felé utazunk felajánlotta a segítségét, s megosztotta velünk egyszobás lakását is. S mivel a város leghíresebb nevezetességében, a Matenadaranban dolgozik, még egy körbevezetést is kaptunk tőle a világ legnagyobb kézirattátában.
- On our first night in Armenia we had a hard time finding a safe camping spot, but we’ve got a safe spot in a family garden just before dark, along with some hot strong coffee in the morning.
- In Jurukveti we had the most perfect farm-stay, when the family let us camp on their porch. They also filled us up with homemade goodies: milk, cheese, yoghurt, eggs, honey… and vodka! Our tastiest moments in Georgia!
- Nino was our contact and host in the SOS Children’s Village in Kutaisi. We were spoiled with that comfortable apartment, and she even took us sight-seeing and to learn to eat the khinkali properly. Thanks for the friendly times, Nino! :)
- One night we knocked on Cira’s door to ask him for a camping spot in her garden. Twenty minutes later she was preparing dinner for us while we warmed up in front of her fireplace, our beds upstairs already made.
– – – – – During our time in Turkey we have met the most amazing people on the road. We are of course always spoiled by our CouchSurfing and WarmShowers hosts, but in this country, it was amazing to experience the kindness we get from random strangers we meet on the road. Especially the employees at the petrol stations, who fed us regularly and gave us a safe caping spot for many of our nights. Thank you all, we had a great time in Turkey! – – – – – Törökországi hat hetünk alatt rengeteg kedvességet kaptunk ismeretlen emberektől, akikkel az utunk során összetalálkoztunk. Legfőképp a kedves benzinkutasoktól, akik számtalan alkalommal megetettek minket és jópár éjszakára kínáltak biztonságos kempinghelyet az utunk során. De kaptunk zacskónyi zöldséget, gyömölcsöt, édességet ajándékba. Nagyon köszönjük, Törökország! Élmény volt itt lenni!
- We just pitched tent, on our last night in Turkey, and were about to start our usual bread-tomato dinner when a local gent came over and suggested we have some PROPER food. He’s making fish today. Yücel and Memet Ali not only fed us until we were bursting (and dizzy from the whiskey), but packed us breakfast as well. Oh, ho we’ll miss Turkish hospitality! – – – – – Utolsó török esténken épp felvertük a sátrat, s láttunk volna hozzá a szokásos kenyér-paradicsom vacsoránknak, amikor egy Yüncel és Memet Ali hozzánk léptek és javasolták hogy együnk inkább valami IGAZI vacsorát. Ma épp halat készítenek, saját fogásból, s szívesen látnak minket…
- When everyone else refused us, Nuri (middle) has hosted us in Trabzon for a week, while we’ve been waiting for us visas. Even though, it was exam week… and he had another couple staying already. He was the most casual about our stay, opening his home to us and spending his free time with us, showing us around and taking us to a local gig. While we initially were upset because of the week-long stay in Trabzon, it turned out to be a great time for us, hanging out with Nuri, Paul and Leiset (left, right), the Aussie couple who thought us loads of cycle touring while we stayed together. – – – – – Nurinál is a vizsgaidőszak közepén laktunk.
- Erdi took us in on a last minute request, even though he had exams early next morning. He even cooked us a perfect cyclist dinner and entertained us with his lovely parrots! What a great guy! It’s a pleasure to be added to his WarmShowers picture collection!
- Harun bumped into us at a gas station / refreshment stop, as we tried to explain that we would like to camp there. He not only arranged everything, but also invited us for dinner and breakfast the next morning, deciding to order for us, when he thought we are being too modest. The memory of his kindness and fun personality will stay with us for the rest of our trip, for sure.
- The super lovely Sara has been our host in Samsun. We welcomed the chance to spend some time with a smart, well-travelled American, who’s been living in Asia for 6 years. We departed from her home after 3 days not just clean and well rested, but also more aware of our Turkish surroundings. Great times!
- Aybars and Faruk have hosted us in Karabük and showed us how university life goes in Turkey. They gave us they home to rest our legs for a couple days and together with they friend, Beren they introduced us to some great Turkish breakfast!
- Kerem and his Family took us in when we needed a last-minute host in Istanbul. We really enjoyed having a look into young Turkish family life and meeting the fab cyclist community Kerem belongs to. We had a great time! Thank you for the lovely evening in Fenerbahçe! Elkényeztettek remek házi koszttal, s Kerem bemutatott minket a helyi biciklis közösségnek is. Igazán jól éreztük magunkat velük!
- Halil hosted us in his building under construction, which was a fabulous adventure. The dozens of names on the walls showed us that we’re not his first guests. He also gave us some invaluable advice on hot to get into Istanbul and stay alive on the Turkish roads and cyclist contacts for the rest of the country. Thank you ever so much! S mindezen túl felbecsülhetetlen tippeket is kaptunk, hogyan jussunk be élve Isztambulba.
- We had the most amazing time in Tekirdag, thanks to uni teacher Huseyin and his student, Ilker, who showed us around town for two days. We’ve been driven around, shown the best views, picnicked on a hilltop, visited lovely tiny villages. It was a great kick-off to our time in Turkey.
- Giannis and Julia invited us to their home in Greece and spoiled us with kindness, and fun, and food. After postponing our departure our five days, when we had to part with them we were ever so sad. We can’t wait to see them again after our travels.
- Toni and Maria hosted us in Shtip, and boy, it was fun! They are amazing musicians and the most hospitable people we’ve met. We hope we can invite them to Budapest as soon as we’re back.
- Sam hosted us in his home in Kumanovo, Macedonia. He’s a Peace Corps volunteer from the USA, and we really enjoyed hearing his account of Macedonia. He’s already spent 2.5 years in the country teaching English and now it’s soon time for his next adventure: cycling from Zagreb to Paris. Good luck, Sam! It was great meeting you! Igazi amerikai, a szó legjobb értelmében!
- We have been invited in for a coffee and chat by Igor, in the Dom kulture, the Serbian Cultural Centre in Gracanica.
- The wonderful Elisa, a Swiss/Milanese girl working in Pristhina, who were our host for three days. We had a lovely time. – – – – – A milánói Elisa három napig gondoskodott rólunk otthonában Prishtinában, ahol egy NGO-nak dolgozik.
- Boki, along with his father Zoran has welcomed us into their homes with open heart, and for three days treated us like family members from far away. It was a great experience meeting them!
- Gato and his owner, Viktor (or maybe the other way around) were our last minute hosts in Niš and we were truly sorry we only had a day with them. Both of them are brilliant characters, well travelled and it was very inspiring to spend a day with them. Viktor even sneaked us into the university canteen for a free lunch.
- Alzbeta put other commitments aside to host us for a night in Petrovac. She’s Czech and a real NGO person, now she works in Serbia for People in Need. It wasn’t just very inspiring talking to her, but also very informative: in a few hours our knowledge on Serbia was doubled.
- Nenad, Lazar and Bojan. The guys cycled past us outside of Mladenovac, and we (Zsolt) managed to catch up with their road bikes. We asked them for recommendation as to where to camp out that night. They took us to their hometown and arranged us a place in the local church’s new community building. Something that has never happened to us before. Moreover, they showed up an hour later with delicious food for us for the next day, then took us out for drinks and sightseeing in beautiful Mladenovac. Meeting them turned a bad day into our best so far. They won’t be forgotten.
- These four gangsters we happen to know. They are good friends and drove after us to Belgrade on a Friday to spend the weekend with us. They got us a comfortable bed, some jam and palinka (our two favourite ways to consume fruits) from home and most of all, their company. We even teared up a bit when they drove off on Sunday. – – – – – Ezt a négy zsiványt éppenséggel ismerjük. Barátaink utánunkautóztak Budapestről Belgrádba, hogy velünk töltsék a hétvégét. Hoztak házi lekvárt, pálinkát (a gyümölcsöt ebben a két formában szeretjük legjobban), de a legjobban a társaságuk esett. Amikor vasárnap elindultak, Zsolt és Zsófi is úgy érezte, hogy valami belement a szemébe…
- In Inđija, after a hard climb on a rainy day, we stepped into the first village pub we found. Here, we were shepherd in by Vladimir, who was so happy to see sporty people in his village, he insisted he pays for everything we have. We asked for something warm to drink, and a pancake to share. Then of course, we were filled with vruca rakija (hot rakija shots with sugar) and double portions of pancakes. It warmed our legs and our heart, and we cycled off happy, if a bit wobbly.
- Zoran and his mum, Mira have hosted us in Bačka Palanka for a night and they treated us like kin – and with the most delicious Serbian food: sarma and pita. Thank you for your generosity and all the best in your little garden of paradise.
- Slavica we didn’t get a picture of. She was our first CS host, and we were too shy. We did get a picture of her dog, though. Slavica gave us a warm room for the night, and we really enjoyed talking to her. She’s a retired english teacher in her mid 60s, who now teaches yoga and travels loads. Last year she spent a month in Burma, volunteering with children, and this year she’s planning to travel in Thailand. We find her very inspiring and admired her spirit! Slavica a hatvanas évei közepén jár, nyugalmazott angoltanár, aki most jógát oktat és rengeteget utazik.
- We stayed at Gábor’s place for a night in Baja via AirBnB. He welcomed us with coffee and delicious madártej and when we realised our chosen dinner place is a bit far for cycling (bit ironic, we know :), he took us by surprise by offering his car for us for the night. We had a great night, thanks!
- Aliz is not just our favourite illustrator ever, but also a good friend. The blog heading and our card design was her present to us. We adore it! You can check out her other works on Behance: https://www.behance.net/alizbuzas – – – – – Aliz a legkedvencebb illusztrátorunk, és a barátaink között is különleges helye van. :) A Behance-en a többi munkáját is megkukkanthatjátok: https://www.behance.net/alizbuzas
- Words cannot describe how much we adore our friends! And luckily, they are so many, they cannot be fit in a picture frame. Thank you for all your support!
- First of all, our WONDERFUL families! They are the best, and without them it’s not that we couldn’t start this trip, but couldn’t have even dreamt about it… We know we put you through a lot of worry, with this crazy idea and we hope we can bring back enough stories for you to make it worthwhile.
